Foundation of Instructional Coaching

  • THE FOUNDATION OF OUR WORK

Change happens in the classroom, and when this change occurs school-wide it has a lasting impact on students. We know that a continuous system of teacher-based supports can directly increase student learning. To have this impact, we have grounded our programs and solutions in research that are proven to increase educators' instructional practices.

    Purpose and Intent

    Why do we need coaching?

    • Builds capacity of teachers and teacher teams in setting goals and supports teachers in working towards goals to improve student achievement
    • Builds efficacy of teachers which positively impacts student achievement

    What is a coach?

    • A coach is a professional who possesses a strong knowledge base of current best practices and trends in education and is trained in how to help teachers become more effective in the classroom so that students improve in their academic performance. They do this by helping to build teacher capacity and using evidence-based practices.

Instructional Coaches are an invaluable resource to improving teacher performance and student outcomes. The roles of an instructional coach include (1) resource provider, (2) data coach, (3) curriculum and instruction specialist, (4) mentor, (5) classroom supporter, and (6) learning facilitator (Killion, 2012).  Our instructional coaches will facilitate implementation of the new curriculum and the learning model as an instructional tool.
