Throwback Thursday: Chinese New Year Celebration at M.G. Ellis

This Throwback Thursday we revisit the 2012 M.G. Ellis Elementary School Chinese New Year celebration, which included a student parade through the halls, in-class art projects and a school program. This celebration, also known as Lunar New Year, generally occurs in the first quarter of the American calendar, and marks the arrival of spring and the start to the new lunisolar calendar.

Widely celebrated in China and other Asian countries including Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore, and South Korea, the two-week celebration is observed with traditions including the decoration of homes, feasts, parades, festivals, parties, and fireworks. According to national news outlets, Lunar New Year is observed by an estimated 2 billion people across the globe.
