  • Bi-District Round

Posted by Coach Dunson on 2/21/2024

Last night, the Boys basketball team faced Alvarado in the Bi-District round of the UIL playoffs.  It was a great game that went down to the wire, but we fell just short by a final score of 51-45.

Senior Malik-El Amin left it all on the floor in his final game, leading both teams in scoring with 19 points.  As a whole, our team played very well, and I was so proud of how they showed up when it mattered most.  We faced a lot of adversity this season, but our boys bought into our mantra of "Find a way and not an Excuse" to exceed expectations and make it as far as they did.

Thank you for all the support you showed us this season and last night at Centennial High School.  Go Cougars!

    Your JV Boys Basketball team traveled to YMLA for their final game of the season. It was a hard-fought, physical game that, unfortunately, the boys came up short, losing 57-49. Tristen Foster did everything he could to keep us in the game, scoring 16 points.  Other scoring;

    PK Shephard – 9 pts
    Grayson Ehirim – 9 pts
    Lennox Stcyre – 8 pts
    Jamarion Armstead – 4 pts
    Jo’Monta Harper – 3 pts

For the season, the boys finished 12-10 overall, 5-6 in district play.  I’m very proud of how these boys played all season long with some very exciting games.  For my 1st time coaching basketball in about 30 years, they renewed some of my love of the game and I thank them for that.

Your JV Boys Basketball Team took on the Eagles of Diamond Hill-Jarvis on Friday night and came away with a hard fought 63-42 win.  After another sluggish start, the boys turned on the pressure with a full-court press, got physical under the boards against DHJ’s huge center and scored on a slew of turnovers.  Your Cougars ran their season record to 12-9 and evened their district record at 5-5 with one game remaining.

Pat “PK” Shephard led all scorers with 17 points, while Tristen Foster and Grayson Ehirim hit a couple of key 3-pointers, rounding out the scoring as follows:

  • Dunbar JV

Posted by Coach Rieder on 2/4/2024

Your JV Boys played 2 games this past week against strong opponents, Dunbar on Wednesday and Eastern Hills on Saturday.  Although we beat Dunbar at home the first time around, they were a much tougher match-up on their home court, resulting in a loss.  On Saturday against a better Hilltopper squad, we hung tough for the 1st half and then Eastern Hills pulled away for the win.  The 2 losses dropped the JV to 4-5 in district play, 11-8 overall.

After a bye on Tuesday, the boys are back in action on Friday at home against Diamond Hill.  JV plays at 6:00 and varsity follows with Senior Night.  We would love to see you out there to watch the varsity clinch a playoff berth.

    Varsity
On Saturday, the varsity boys took on Benbrook in a pivotal district game at Wilkerson Greines.  The boys got off to a fast start and held a substantial lead going into the 4th quarter.  Benbrook battled back, but the Cougars held strong and came out with the 52-47 victory.  This win moved the Cougars to 5-3 in district play and sole possession of third place with 4 games left in district. Junior Jaylen James led us with 16 points.  Junior Brandon Hawkins tossed in 14 points.

The Cougars face some tough opponents this week as we take on Dunbar tomorrow night at 8:00 pm and #1 state-ranked Eastern Hills on Friday at 7:30 pm. Both games are at Wilkerson Greines.

    JV
Your JV Boys took on Benbrook MHS on Saturday morning in a home district matchup. Although the boys played hard, hustled all over the court and hit the boards, we came up on the short end, losing 55-46, to fall to 4-3 in district play. The boys were in the game the whole way, had some real good looks, but the shots just didn’t fall. To paraphrase the great Ron Washington, that is how basketball goes.  To the crowd:  we heard you, and thank you for the excitement you bring.

We again had fairly balanced scoring:
    PK Shephard – 12 pts
    Trenell Patterson – 12 pts
    Lennox Stcyre – 9 pts
    Jamarion Armstead – 8 pts
    DeAnthony Monroe – 3 pts
    Tristen Foster – 2 pts

Last Friday, the varsity boy's basketball team hosted YMLA in a pivotal match-up to conclude the first round of district.  The Cougars showed great composure and toughness down the stretch to come out with the 51-41 win.  We also honored some of our Leonard Middle School players and coaches at halftime.  After the first round of district play, the Cougars stand at 3-3 and 4th place in district 9-4A.

  • JV vs. YMLA

Posted by Coach Rieder on 1/21/2024

On Friday, your JV Boys Basketball team bounced back from the previous game loss in a big way.  The boys overcame early game sluggishness from the extra-long weekend and fought back for a solid 51-43 win over YMLA.  We used an aggressive defense and pounded the boards to keep YMLA from getting back in the game.

Offensively, the boys were led by Tristen Foster with 15 points after a number of nice drives and a key 3 in the 4th to keep pressure on YMLA.  Other scorers were:

    Lennox Stcyre -  10 pts
    Jamarion Armstead – 7
    Blake Davis – 7
    Trenell Patterson – 7
Grayson Ehirim – 3 (including another key 3 in the 4th quarter)
    DeAnthony Monroe – 2

Defensively, Blake Davis and Jamarion Armstead led the Cougars in controlling YMLA’s top shooter, while Lennox and Trenell handled the boards.

Once again, the crowd played a key role with their enthusiasm.  The boys appreciate the support.  The next game is Tuesday at Carter-Riverside (6:00 start).  Hope to see you there.
