    PLTW Project Lead The Way (PLTW) is a nonprofit organization that provides a transformative learning experience for K-12 students and teachers across the U.S. PLTW empowers students to develop in-demand, transportable knowledge and skills through pathways in computer science, engineering, and biomedical science. PLTW’s teacher training and resources support teachers as they engage their students in real-world learning.     Preparing students to thrive

    • STEM knowledge and skills are used in many more occupations than those traditionally thought of as science and engineering.
    • In 2010, about 5 million U.S. workers were officially classified as having a science and engineering occupation. Yet an estimated 16.5 million college-educated individuals reported that their job required at least a bachelor’s degree level of science and engineering training.
    • According to one report, there may be as many as 26 million jobs in the United States that require significant STEM knowledge and skill in at least one field. This represents nearly 20% of all U.S. jobs. (Revisiting the STEM Workforce: A Companion to Science and Engineering Indicators 2014. Arlington, Virginia: the National Science Board (NSB), 2015)
    • There is a disparaging lack of diversity among women and minority students in STEM focused studies and careers. Women constitute 48 percent of the U.S. workforce but hold just 24 percent of the U.S. jobs in STEM. Only 1 in 10 STEM professionals is a minority woman. PLTW’s programs aim to engage all students – as early as kindergarten – in STEM subjects and introduce them to the wide range of opportunities and careers in these fields

    PLTW Gateway (Middle School)

    Middle school is a time of exploration, a time when students are figuring out what they’re passionate about today and how that relates to who they’ll become tomorrow.

    During this transitional time, PLTW Gateway’s 10 units empower students to lead their own discovery. The hands-on program boosts classroom engagement and excitement, drives collaboration, and inspires “aha! moments” and deep comprehension. And as students engage in PLTW’s activities in computer science, engineering, and biomedical science, they see range of paths and possibilities they can look forward to in high school and beyond.

    A few of the hands-on challenges PLTW Gateway students engage in:

    • Examining ways to cut energy consumption
    • Creating mobile apps that help clients overcome obstacles
